Report: New US sanctions may target Russia’s defense sector

MOSCOW, Dec 17 (PRIME) -- New E.U. and U.S. sanctions against Russia over Ukraine may target defense companies in addition to the banking and energy sectors, Bloomberg reported late on Thursday, citing sources close to the process.

“The (sanctions) list is strong and broadly echoes the potential sanctions the U.S. is working on. It covers measures targeting Russian financial institutions, banks and access to payments systems, including Swift; defense companies; the energy sector, including coal, and technology exports; a new sanctions regime on hybrid attacks, adding more individuals to existing sanctions lists and putting an end to visa-free travel for diplomatic passport holders,” the agency said.

Russia has repeatedly responded to Western allegations by saying that it does not threaten anyone and is not going to attack anyone, but it will not ignore actions potentially dangerous to its interests.
